Content and Structure
This EHRI online edition makes available about 45 documents from three archives, the majority of the material comes from the Vienna Wiesenthal Institute for Holocaust Studies, Simon Wiesenthal Archives (on loan from BJVN), and the other few are chosen from the collections of the Ghetto Fighters' House Archives in Israel and from the United States Holocaust Memorial.
In chapter A of this EHRI online edition, “Historical Sources on the Literary Narrative”, we present archival material that sheds new light on the biographical and historical events behind the narrative of the book. Chapter B, “Wiesenthal´s Correspondence”, contains the correspondence between Wiesenthal, the editors, and several intellectuals from various countries, thus reconstructing the difficult path towards the publication of the book itself and showing how responses were requested. Furthermore, the correspondence illuminates the motivation of authors who expressed their support of the project or their refusal to participate. The sources in chapter C and D, “The Sunflower’s Reception” and “School and Public Projects”, offer new insights into the afterlife of the book. While chapter C includes reviews of the book in the international press and individual responses to Wiesenthal after the publication of “The Sunflower”, the sources in chapter D give an insight into educational and public projects that build on the book.
